Today we’ll be comparing two of the most popular location-based social network apps around: Foursquare and Gowalla. These two apps are very similar: both allow you to check in at places you visit, follow old friends and meet new ones, and earn achievements based on where you visit.
We’ll be breaking the apps down and comparing them on a number of measures so you can make an informed decision about which network you should join, and which iPhone app you should use (if not both!)
I’m not an insomniac. Not really. I just picked up an unfortunate habit in college of not getting to sleep until 3am, and I haven’t quite managed to get rid of it yet. Partly as a result, I’ve been wishing vaguely for a FitBit for some time now. $100 is a bit much to spend just to feel guilty for not exercising enough, though, so I haven’t acquired one yet.
Then a friend told me about Sleep Cycle, an app that claims to track your sleep patterns and wake you at the optimum moment in your sleep cycle, resulting in a more natural and restful awakening. At $.99, testing it was a no-brainer. Here’s what I found.
If you’re a savvy shopper and like to compare prices before making a purchase, nothing is better than knowing you are getting the best deal. When I am shopping for anything, saving money is a big priority. And really, who doesn’t like to save a few bucks these days?
I have always used my iPhone to do a quick google search to compare prices on larger purchases. But what if you could do this on nearly every purchase you make using only the product’s barcode? RedLaser from Occipital LLC is a very handy app that lets you do just that.
Parking is usually a nightmare these days with the stress of remembering the time you have left on your meter, where you left your car, and what floor it is on in a multi-story car park. Well, now you can relax! AutoPark is here to save the day and aid in all those areas.
Created by Frolicware, AutoPark is designed to save you from receiving pesky, unwanted parking tickets. It has GPS, timers, and push notifications built-in to assist you in the whole parking process.
Have you ever wished to bridge the gap between technology and your personal life on the iPhone? Now you can with a new app called Momento. Momento, from D3i, is an app that acts a “digital diary,” if you will. It stores everything from journal entries to Flickr photos into a timeline that is fully searchable based on tagged people, places or custom tags. Momento lets you add photos to your entries as well, making for a nice, media-rich diary.
On top of keeping record of diary entries or “moments,” as the app calls them, Momento integrates itself with Twitter, Facebook, Flickr and Last.fm to create a content-rich timeline. Let’s dive in and check out all the features this great app has to offer and how to take advantage of them.
Glasshouse Apps have developed two applications to make your life that little bit easier. The first, Barista, is full of recipes to creating that perfect, café-style coffee. Whether its a Caffé Latte, Espresso or the humble Flat White – Barista has it.
Cellar on the other hand is an application for adding, organising and keeping track of your wine library. It boasts back up features and many customisable options to make the virtual wine bottles look life-like.
Both applications have an impeccable interface that not only encourages you to explore the application further, but also start using it! Barista and Cellar are available for both the iPhone and iPod touch.
