Today we’ll be comparing two of the most popular location-based social network apps around: Foursquare and Gowalla. These two apps are very similar: both allow you to check in at places you visit, follow old friends and meet new ones, and earn achievements based on where you visit.

We’ll be breaking the apps down and comparing them on a number of measures so you can make an informed decision about which network you should join, and which iPhone app you should use (if not both!)

There’s certainly no shortage of social networking-related applications for the iPhone. Some are great, and some are fairly dire; it’s a hard concept to execute well on a mobile device. A few days ago, a fellow iPhone touting friend introduced me to WhatsApp. The concept is essentially free iPhone-to-iPhone messaging, and sharing of links, photos, maps and audio.

I’ve been using WhatsApp for a few days, and felt that it merited a review on the site. It’s simple, clever to set up, and works reliably between all the devices and friends I tried it with. A version is also available for Blackberry, so you can interact with a slightly wider circle of friends.

I’m not an insomniac. Not really. I just picked up an unfortunate habit in college of not getting to sleep until 3am, and I haven’t quite managed to get rid of it yet. Partly as a result, I’ve been wishing vaguely for a FitBit for some time now. $100 is a bit much to spend just to feel guilty for not exercising enough, though, so I haven’t acquired one yet.

Then a friend told me about Sleep Cycle, an app that claims to track your sleep patterns and wake you at the optimum moment in your sleep cycle, resulting in a more natural and restful awakening. At $.99, testing it was a no-brainer. Here’s what I found.

I have always used my iPhone to do a quick google search to compare prices on larger purchases. But what if you could do this on nearly every purchase you make using only the product’s barcode? RedLaser from Occipital LLC is a very handy app that lets you do just that.

Created by Frolicware, AutoPark is designed to save you from receiving pesky, unwanted parking tickets. It has GPS, timers, and push notifications built-in to assist you in the whole parking process.

Have you ever wished to bridge the gap between technology and your personal life on the iPhone? Now you can with a new app called Momento. Momento, from D3i, is an app that acts a “digital diary,” if you will. It stores everything from journal entries to Flickr photos into a timeline that is fully searchable based on tagged people, places or custom tags. Momento lets you add photos to your entries as well, making for a nice, media-rich diary.

On top of keeping record of diary entries or “moments,” as the app calls them, Momento integrates itself with Twitter, Facebook, Flickr and Last.fm to create a content-rich timeline. Let’s dive in and check out all the features this great app has to offer and how to take advantage of them.
