Many of you may know that when the iPhone was originally released users only had first-party apps to rely on. Then came the release of the iPhone 3G and the App Store. Over time, many third-party apps have come along that have bested first-party iOS apps, so much so that users have thrown those first-party apps into a folder to never be used.

A good example of this occurrence would be Evernote, which goes far and beyond Notes’ capabilities. Additionally, Reminders, Calendar, Voice Memos, Stocks and Weather have third-party competitors that some users find better to use. But one app that I’ve never been able to find a possible replacement for is Clock — that is, until I discovered Timegg. (more…)

There are countless reasons that one might need to convert from one unit to another. Maybe you are an mechanical engineer who needs to convert your water pressure from inches of mercury to kilopascals. Or maybe you are just a high school student who wants to convert square feet to square meters for a geometry problem. Convex is an app that converts a variety of measurements between different units and does so with a simple, intuitive and beautiful package.

There are lots of apps out there that convert between units of measurement on the app store and claim to be the best, the easiest or the most powerful. An example of a great measurement conversion app is Convertbot, by Tapbots. Clearly, these two apps are similar, from the wheel of units that the app is based around to the clever ways that each of the different measurements are displayed. But how does Convex stack up? Shopping online can be a great experience, especially because it helps you avoid making numerous trips to the store. However, if you frequently buy online, keeping track of all your shipments can be a major headache.

To help ease the burden, you can keep all their orders organized and track each shipment individually, or you can go with the better option of using one of the two best package tracking apps available on iOS. But the question is, which is the better app? Find out after the jump. (more…)

Nowadays, iPhone owners are shooting movies and recording albums on their phone, as well as taking care of day-to-day tasks like grocery shopping, tweeting and sharing pictures. Because the iPhone is such a versatile device, the need to purchase other pieces of technology have subsided, especially when referring to GPS devices.

The App Store offers multiple GPS apps, which vary quite dramatically in price — but if you’re looking for a full-fledged GPS app, NAVIGON is the only way to go. Find out why after the jump. (more…)

I did a post a little while back on an application that replaced the Address Book on your iPhone, and it seems that these 3rd party apps are starting to gain more and more traction. Developers are starting to see the need for a better address book and are doing something about it. I, for one, love Apple and its products and software, and I am really hoping that these apps push them to make the iPhone OS better sooner rather than later.

In this review, I look at an application that is almost the complete opposite of the one I recently reviewed. It is called Buzz Contacts, and it is developed by the same guys that brought you Agenda, a great looking calendar application for the iPhone. (more…)

I have always loved apps that make it easier to access what I need when I need it. I am all about efficiency and the more time I can save the better, even if it is only seconds, which then turn to minutes, and well, you know how it goes. One of my favorite apps that definitely helps in reducing my time for the Mac is Alfred, which for those of you that don’t know, is a great tool for accessing all the different things on your Mac a lot quicker and easier.

One thing I never got was the fact that the iPhone never had shortcuts — easy ways to get to the things that I do all the time.  So when App Cubby came out with Launch Center, I just had to try it out to see if it would actually help me in my use of the iPhone. It’s a “one stop shop” where you can access a variety of shortcuts to help you make life a little easier on the iPhone.

Uploading a bunch of photos for your friends to view is a pain. First you’ll probably want to connect your iPhone to your computer (or, if you’re using iCloud, fire your computer up and revel in the glory of Photo Stream), then you’ll choose which photos to upload, and then you’ll tag your friends and label the album.

This is a pain. Luckily, Batch is here to the rescue, allowing you to upload a bunch of photos (you might even say, a batch of photos) to the service and then share them on Facebook or Twitter.

Does the app work as well as it should, or is this a bad batch? Read on to find out, and I promise I won’t make any more bad puns.

I love to use my iPhone to take a lot of pictures. It’s convenient, easy to use and I have it with me practically all the time. And now with a five-month-old son, I am definitely taking a lot of pictures to send to friends and family.

One thing that I never liked about photo storage on the iPhone was that it was very limited. You can see all your pics and send them to social networks in a few steps, but I wanted something more; something that gave me greater control over my photos. Well, I think I may have found that in Tags & Albums.

I’ve talked a little bit about how single-function apps help me manage the different aspects of my life, and how utilities can be extremely beneficial and excel at one key aspect. Dialvetica is one of those apps.

What can Dialvetica do for you? Well, that depends on what you want it to do. The possibilities aren’t quite endless, but this utility is one of the favorite apps that I’ve added to my iPhone. Why? Read on and find out.

No doubt that any of you who have ever had the fortune of travelling by plane have had the confusing experience of locating information on the boarding pass. These things, it seems, were designed by a “small, blind, parakeet” (from Tyler’s post) and finding what you want can be a mission in its self.

Well the guys from Sylion took it upon themselves to solve this issue and quite simply reinvent the boarding pass. Head on past the break to meet Flight Card, and see how their stunning design has influenced the way we fly — forever.
