Pepperplate is the best recipe app and meal planner by far! The Pepperplate website makes it easy to get to all my recipes away from the iPad too.

Agreed. Awesome site and app. The support is great too. They got right back with answers to my questions and more features they are rolling out in the next few weeks. Sounds like recipe sharing is next.

My question would be really simple: if this app is really worth the price?
There are plenty of alternatives that you can get for free but what makes this one stand out?

Pepperplate is free on the app store and in the android market too. It looks like this article is from last year when they must have been charging for it.
