You heard right, Jamie Oliver has a shiny new App.
Whether you are a massive Jamie fan (you know who you are), happened to quite like Jamie’s 20 Minute Meals, have tried cooking using your iPhone but aren’t convinced, or simply feed yourself regularly, then read on and join the revolution!
Design & Interface
Upon opening Jamie’s Recipes you’ll be brought into a lovingly crafted library of recipes where you can select a recipe set or browse and make purchases from the available selection. The immediate impression is stunning! Great photography and quality design is what greets you – and it’s not just skin deep!
The interface design of Jamie’s Recipes is exemplary and consistent – as you’ll be able to see throughout this review! The dark panelled background works really well alongside the notepad feel of the shopping list and clean menus.
The inclusion of high quality photographs, videos, and handmade looking step-by-step instruction cards are a few of the notable highlights.
Cooking Up A Storm
It must be said that the design and interface, while beautiful, really are the means to an end – developing your culinary skills and creating incredible food! The way to get the most out of Jamie’s Recipes is to pick a great sounding recipe and dive in.
Each recipe has three sections, all of which are key to perfecting the dish:
- You’ll need
The summary gives an overview of the meal and links to any useful related videos. The “You’ll Need” tab describes the ingredients and equipment needed and gives you the option to add specific ingredients and pieces of equipment to your shopping list.
The final tab gives you all the steps you need to follow to whip up that particular recipe – you can rotate your iPhone for a more intuitive experience and double tap the screen for step by step photos!
Cooking up a storm for more than 2 people? Simply tap the number icon in the top right corner and the ingredients are adjusted for you!
Following the recipes couldn’t be easier and the extra inclusion of which ingredients you’ll need (including amounts) at each stage is excellent. The only disappointment is the lack of hands free functionality – something that rival recipe App Nigella’s Quick Collection does include!
Besides that minor issue, it must be said that the sheer amount of content and detail for each recipe is astounding – the fact that the last step before serving is always to make your table respectable is a nice touch!
Going Shopping & Essentials
One particularly useful feature that has been revamped from its previous version on Jamie’s 20 Minute Meals is the shopping list function. Quickly and easily adding whole recipes and pieces of equipment to your virtual shopping list is great, and the ability to sort them by aisle is inspired. The new addition to this app however is the ability to add your own custom items – everything you need to get is now in one place!
While it’s a little impractical (and time consuming) to add your entire pantry, adding custom items is great for helping you to remember those extra little things. Overall, the functionality of the shopping list is great, I especially enjoy the swooshing noise it makes when you check off an item!
Another key feature of Jamie’s Recipes is the “Essentials” section. Jamie Oliver has helpfully included a list of vital ingredients and pieces of equipment that are necessary for following his recipes and becoming supreme in the kitchen. While helpful, it’s worth looking at what kinds of things you’re likely to be cooking before going out and spending piles of cold hard cash on an expensive food processor!
Jamie In Your Pocket
On top of the more standard recipe App features, Jamie’s Recipes goes a step further than any recipe book ever could by placing video of Jamie right in the palm of your hand! The use of video tutorials and tips was an excellent part of Jamie’s 20 Minute Meals and Jamie’s Recipes replicates this feature. Each video requires downloading before viewing (best over a wifi connection), and there are four to get you going in the Taster Pack.
Watching the videos takes barely any time whatsoever and, in my experience, can genuinely help with improving your culinary skills!
It’s great to see that Jamie’s Recipes is built with longevity in mind – it’s designed to be expandable and allow more and more recipe sets to be added. As for pricing, it’s worth noting that the app itself is free and comes with a Taster Pack of 12 recipes – there’s no harm in trying it out and seeing whether your iPhone is the cooking companion for you! Additional recipe packs cost $2 and currently include:
- Festive Feasts
- Classic Comfort Food
- Brilliant Breakfast and Brunch
- 10 Minute Meals
- Fast Food, Slow-Cooking
- Tasty Tray-bakes
- 20-Minute Meals Volumes 1-4
- 20-Minute Meals Vegetarian
The pricing is fair as a good amount of high quality content is included with each pack and you can check to see whether you like the sound of the recipes included beforehand. I would, however, have liked to see the 20 Minute Meal packs included, or at least made cheaply available, as a sign of goodwill to those who have already spent money on the previous app – not a major criticism as you can still just use the previous app, it’s always nice to have everything in one place though!
Overall, Jamie’s Recipes is an excellent app that could truly make a difference in the way you cook and eat. If you are a Jamie fan then it should be downloaded immediately, if not then I would heartily recommend you try it and see! I may be a little biased, being an unashamed fan of Jamie’s style of cooking, but even Jamie Oliver skeptics can’t fail to be won over by this gorgeous and effortlessly useful app!
