Creators of Over have obviously embraced that old adage, “Simple is best.” Launching the app reveals a straightforward tool that’s easy to understand and a joy to use. Just like Instagram made you feel like an awesome photographer, Over encourages your inner designer, with impressive results. The home screen is a grid of photos imported from your mobile device. To begin, select a photo you’ve already taken or tap Take Photo to launch your camera.
After selecting a photo, you’ll find a wheel with various tools appears on the screen. Swipe the wheel up and down to view all the options: Font, Edit, Photos, Reset, Share, Save and More. One thing you figure out while using this app is that certain actions undo all your work, so it’s best to begin with the Edit function and crop your photo before adding text. You’ll definitely want to crop the photo if you plan to share it on Instagram, where it must be square-shaped.
Over keeps it simple with just a few editing options that are important when adding text to your image. The most important option to begin with is Crop, as discussed above. Size allows you to adjust the size of the text by tapping + for enlarging and – for decreasing. Just below Size are three options for text alignment: left, center and right. Lastly, Tint affects the tint of the actual photo. Brightening or darkening the tint is helpful in making the text stand out more. Once you’re finished editing, tap the yellow arrow and the wheel options reappear. You can always go back to the Edit function and tweak things.
The Reset function is great if you don’t like what you’ve done and just want to start with a clean slate. Tap it and the app asks if you would like to start over with the original image.
Once your image is prepped it’s time to have fun with the fonts. Scroll through the selection – you can purchase a pack of 200+ more fonts for $0.99 cents by tapping the Unlock More Fonts option in the fonts list. Unless you’re a typography addict, you’ll probably find more than enough options to choose from in the 28 included fonts.
Now that you’ve selected a font, edit the text by double tapping it. Type your message, then select a color for the text. Over provides a whole rainbow of colors, with multiple shades of each hue. Tap and drag the text to move it around the photo. Once you’re happy, hit Save on the options wheel and Over saves a copy of the image to your photo library on the mobile device. The app provides an excellent user experience, with quick performance and instant results during the editing process. No staring at your phone waiting for something to happen.
Over is a real over achiever in the sharing department. The creators understand that users want to share their creations with friends, and they make sharing easy and fun, with plenty of options. Tap Share on the tool wheel and the menu appears. Upload photos to Twitter, Facebook and Instagram or share with Email.
Things really get exciting with Postcard, which turns your photo into a 4-by-6-inch postcard that will be printed and shipped anywhere in the world. Powered by Sincerely, Inc., the app walks you through the process of setting up an account and purchasing the service. How cool is it to be able to turn your creation into a real card and send it to a friend with the touch of a button?
Over is a fun, addictive app for overlaying text on your photos. The creators have given you everything you need to do the job in an interface that’s intuitive and easy to use. Photo editing is quick and seamless so you can enjoy the beautiful results of your labor without a fuss. Occasionally when I was moving around in the app I notice edits seemed to be reset, which was mildly annoying but easy to fix. Really there is very little to complain about in the Over experience. Text is another creative element in the photo-editing tool bag, and Over users are coming up with some really inventive ways to incorporate typography into their photos.
