Tell Your Story in Video with Directr

If you own a smartphone, you’ve probably become comfortable with photo editing apps: taking pictures, applying filters and sharing images in your social networks. Many of us have yet to make the leap to video because it’s just not as quick and easy as the seconds it takes to photograph and edit in apps like Instagram. If you’re a photo junkie and can’t resist documenting everyday life, Directr is a game changer.

This new (free) video app for the iPhone makes it quick and easy to shoot video clips and weave them together to form a movie in minutes. The focus is on using storyboard templates to create meaningful stories that your friends and family will enjoy watching. Developers of Directr want making a movie to be as easy as taking a photograph, so there’s no editing, no filters and no fluff.

Getting Started

Directr strikes a good balance of leading you through the video making process without making it overcomplicated. Friendly, casual prompts to action help users dive into video immediately rather than standing on the sidelines watching everyone else have fun. You’ve got to create an account either with Facebook or your email before getting started.

Prior to jumping into the pool, it’s good to check out what others are doing. Tap the globe icon on the bottom right corner and find the Explore screen, where you’ll find movies created by other Directr users.

I liked how Maxime used the Day Trip storyboard to create Hello Sanfrancisco and tapped Direct It to use that template for my own movie.

Scroll through movies made by other users for inspiration. Tap the play button to watch and if you like the Storyboard template, tap the purple Direct It button to use it for your own movie. If you’re not ready to shoot the movie right now, go back to exploring and the template you’ve selected will remain saved for later use in My Movies.

A Simple Process

As a first step, you may want to adjust your privacy settings by tapping the icon of three white bars at the top right corner of the screen. Go to Settings and label your movies as Private or Public. To create a movie, start by tapping the purple + icon located bottom center of the screen. You will see two options: Choose a Storyboard or Start Blank. It’s easy to be tempted by Start Blank, especially if you love to control the process, but the Storyboard options are a lot of fun to explore. Storyboard templates are created by the staff at Directr and you can see the Storyboard in action by watching a video example.

Storyboard templates include a standard intro, number of scenes and amount of video. Bathtime (L) is made up of 8 shots lasting a total of 41 seconds. If you only want to take 6 shoots the app deletes empty shots from the finished video. Watch the movie template to see the Storyboard in action.

Start Blank gives you three choices for making movies without a themed Storyboard template: Short, Medium and Long. You can overlay text on your video clips, but the text is always white and will not show up if you’re shooting a white subject. Also, Directr creates a musical soundtrack for your finished video, and because you aren’t using a themed Storyboard, sometimes the music doesn’t match the mood.

I created a movie about making tea using the Start Blank option rather than a storyboard. After shooting each video clip you can watch a rough cut before finishing the movie.

Whether you use a Storyboard or Start Blank, the moviemaking process is quick and easy. Tap on the purple camera icon to shoot the video clips. You can create multiple clips from the same scene, which are saved in the little box with a number under the video camera. The ability to choose your favorite out of all the takes and use it in the final movie is a useful feature.

That’s a Wrap!

You don’t have to finish a movie all in one setting, and Directr conveniently saves your work under In Progress without you telling it to do so. When you’re ready, tap Finish Movie and Director weaves the video clips together in a process called Printing. It takes a minute or two, which can test your patience if your Internet connection isn’t great.

After my Tea Time movie is finished and Directr weaves all the video clips together in a process called Printing. Once the movie is created I can share it with friends or download it to my phone.

Making a short movie with Directr only takes a minute, and the app does everything for you so you can focus on storytelling rather than editing. Create memories of your children growing up, family vacations and holiday gatherings. Document the beauty in the everyday with Storyboard themes like What’s In Your Pocket, This Is Where I Live and Ten Things On My Way To Work. Use video to sell your car or house. Find inspiration in themes that encourage you to see the world in a new way, like Faces In The Wild or Stripes In The Wild. The possibilities are endless!

Conclusion

Directr is an iPhone app dedicated to getting the average Joe into making movies using a quick and simple process without fussing with editing. The videos are silent except for musical soundtracks, which puts all the focus on the action. Templates and the short time format may seem restricting at first, but these limitations help users to create punchy movies that tell a story and effectively engage their audience.

The developers of Directr have come out of the gate running, but they’ve still got some work to do in getting the app up to par with preferences users expect. For example, users can Heart (like) videos by other users, but there is no place to keep track of favorite videos or follow other users. Also, it’s not quite clear how videos on the Explore screen are organized — not by date or number of hearts. On the flipside the creators of Directr go above and beyond in the customer service area, listening to users and quickly responding publicly to amend flaws in the app.

Directr is fun, easy to use and addictive. If you’ve always wanted to create beautiful movie memories but have been intimidated by the process, Directr will set your creativity free.
