One of my favorite things to do while traveling is sampling the local cuisine. There are times when dining at a familiar chain is comforting, but more often than not I prefer to find an establishment native to the city that I’m visiting. When it comes to finding these local favorites, there are a few apps one can employ such as Yelp or Urbanspoon. For me, though, I stick to one app in particular: Ness.

In November 2011 I reviewed Ness, which I called a “sure fire winner.” Recently, Ness received a major revamp, including a new method for finding recommendations, list creation and more. Find out after the jump if the revamp is an improvement or hindrance to an already fantastic app. (more…)

With the numerous and varied food-finding apps on the market, the average restaurant goer has an arsenal of handy decision-helping technology at his fingertips. You can search for what is closest, what cuisine you love and even what local chefs recommend. But what about searching for ambiance, in other words, a particular vibe. Say you are looking for a place to go on a romantic date, and you are looking for a restaurant that is reasonably priced, cozy, romantic and maybe a little Don Draper-esque? Or maybe your companion is of the printed kind (come on, you know you’ve shunned human dinner dates so that you could read about that juicy love triangle that was just starting to develop in the book you said you would never read, but somehow made its way into your hands by way of impractical night of vino and Amazon.com. No? Just me?) Well, friends, Hoppit can help you out.

Ready to see what your city has to offer? (more…)

When I married a woman who is an incredible cook and loves to bake, I knew I had hit the jackpot. Unfortunately, what I didn’t realize is that also meant I was now obligated to watch hours of programming on the Food Network. In the last five years I’ve seen so much Paula Deen my arteries are clogged just from watching, and I’ve learned that you can make literally anything into a food competition with ingredients I’ve never even heard of (what exactly is “jaggery” anyway?).

Well, if you’re a foodie like my wife who loves watching the Food Network then you might interested in their new app, Food Network On the Road. The question now is does it live up to the promise of helping you find all the places where the stars eat when you’re on the road? Read on to find out. (more…)

We all stumble upon YouTube videos different ways. Sometimes it’s a coworker at the office who passes around a clip, or maybe a friend says, “You’ve GOT to see this.” I don’t remember how I found out about the Epic Meal Time crew, but I did, and I’ve been a fan ever since.

Now they have an app for the iPad and iPhone — the appropriately named Epic Meal Time — and it’s a doozy. Will their success on YouTube parlay into more Internet money made in the App Store? Put on your sunglasses and your Expos hat, because we’re going to find out.  (more…)

There are a lot of daily deals subscription sites (more than I know I can manage), and keeping up with all of those coupons hitting your inbox can leave you feeling pressured to scoop up that bargain even if you’re not sure when, or really if, you’re going to use it. You probably know if you’re getting a haircut or going on vacation in a few weeks, so buying those sorts of deals in advance may seem like an easier commitment to make.

But what are you and your friends going to feel like eating after the movie on Friday and where are you going to want to have brunch on Sunday morning? You haven’t locked those choices in when you buy that Groupon on Monday; these are decisions you’re going to make on the fly, and BiteHunter is there to the rescue. You don’t know you’ll want gyros Saturday afternoon or even where to look for a deal at a Greek restaurant, but BiteHunter does and puts all that and pizza, sushi, and more on your phone. (more…)
