Let’s face it: we all want to be smarter. The only problem seems to be that programs that allow us to do so are very costly or not realistic with our everyday schedules. However, one tool that we overlook happens to be in our pocket. That’s right, it’s our iPhone.

The App Store has a wealth of applications that can help you exercise your brain, whether you have five minutes on hand or hours to spare. Plus, many of these applications are free. Today we have a roundup of 40 iPhone apps that help make you smarter. Read on to find out which ones made the cut.

The new iPhone should be out this fall, and per usual, there’s a lot of talk about this next iPhone coming in more colors than just black and white. The iPod touch already has several color options, why not the iPhone, right?

Let’s pretend that you’re the person in charge of the decision. What do you think? Should the next iPhone come in more colors than black and white, or is it just fine as is? Let us know in the poll to the right!

People talk all the time about the release of a “low-end” iPhone. What denotes low-end? Sometimes it’s a lower amount of memory, other times it’s a non-Retina display. But whatever they say today, the concept is that Apple needs to release some kind of free iPhone at the same time that they release whatever the next model happens to be. So, in theory, there would be an iPhone 5S (or 6, or whatever), and this hypothetical low-end iPhone.

What do you think? Do you want a low-end iPhone or do you care? Let us know in the poll to the right!

In the process of reviewing apps, I started to wonder how much time I spent on my iPhone. It’s got to be a lot, right? And if that’s the case — which it most certainly is — what do I do the most?

Now before I got my first iPhone I would’ve guessed that talking on the phone would be its primary activity. But now, I’m just not that sure. I spend a ton of time taking pictures and sending messages, plus there’s listening to music and watching videos.

So what about you? What would you guess is the No. 1 thing you do with your iPhone? Let us know in the poll to the right!

I adore Twitter. The idea of a micro-blogging service holds tremendous appeal to me, and millions of other people. But the only people that will see something I tweet and care about are my followers. Sometimes, I just want to throw something out there and figure out where it lands.

Enter Airendipity, a new iPhone app that lets you do just that. (more…)

Valentine’s Day at my house this year is going to be a little different than in past years. That’s the 36 week mark in my wife’s pregnancy, meaning that she’s officially full term at that point and we’re on baby watch. My gut tells me that means I should get her something special.

Talking to friends about their V-Day plans, I realized that most of them communicate with the same device. They usually buy the same model of iPhone at the same time, and then they’re both using the same device. But that’s not always the case. What about you? Do you and your significant other both have iPhones? Let us know in the poll to the right!

Every time I open Index Card for iPhone, I feel a little intimidated. That’s because it’s a different breed than the regular app; Index Card feels like a single-purpose, desktop-class productivity app. If you’re like me and you’re used to littering your wall with post-it notes or covering a cork board with actual index cards but wish you could make this part of your life a little more digital, it’s going to take you ten seconds to see Index Card as a godsend app.

If you’re not like me, you might take a little more convincing than that. That’s alright. I’m traditionally wary of making my pen-and-paper practices digital, but Index Card really does fill in a need for me that helps me look a little more sane whenever I start plotting out my latest story ideas. The only thing my post-it covered wall ever got me was a bunch of questioning looks from guests and a public display of my most secret ideas. (more…)

Maybe you’ve been reading an article and a term popped out at you, but you didn’t want to stop reading for long to research it. Or you were sitting at a dinner party, and someone mentioned a movie you hadn’t heard of, but you didn’t have time to hit up IMDB or Wikipedia and read about it. I get moments like this all the time. The team behind Dunno calls them brainslaps, and they don’t want you to miss another one ever again.

Dunno is a free cloud-based app that does research for you while you wait. It’s a universal iOS app and also available on OS X. Think of it like Wunderlist or Evernote, but instead of adding things to a to-do list or jotting down some quick notes, you’re getting research done while you’re away from the Web. (more…)

Jordan Mechner, later responsible for the Prince of Persia game franchise, released his first game in 1984 for the Apple II. This game was Karateka. It’s a side-scrolling game featuring industry changing one-on-one combat about a lover trying to save the Princess Mariko from Akuma’s castle fortress. It’s a simple, classic video game story.

Mechner returned to his independent roots earlier this year to remake the game in HD. First appearing on consoles, the remake has an all-star developer team: Screenwriter John August (who is listed as a producer), Grammy-winning composer Christopher Tin, and artist Jeff Matsuda were all involved in the production. I never played the original, so I’m walking into this with fresh eyes. And I was not disappointed. (more…)

I’ve got a problem, and it’s headphones. Although the iPhone 5 came with EarPods that are much better than the previous earbuds, I still find myself looking for a nice and comfortable set of headphones. Turns out that I now have a small collection going, with no end in sight. There’s the pair that I use because they have a noise canceling feature, or the ones I toss in a bag because they’re small and convenient. Some I wear in public because they don’t leak sound, others I try to hide because of their cost.

What about you? What kind of headphones do you use with your iPhone? Let us know in the poll to the right!
