Guitar!, a new mobile music game from accomplished iOS app powerhouse Smule offers the musically inclined mobile gamer a new twist on the virtual virtuoso theme. Playing along with popular hits using the iPhone (or iPad and iPod Touch — Guitar! is a universal app) touchscreen isn’t revolutionary.

Many past apps, including some of Smule’s own (Ocarina, anyone?) have been built around this functionality. But Guitar! stands out from the crowd, because it offers another layer of interactivity. Let’s dig into it after the jump.  (more…)

EpicHearts is from 4:33, the talented developers of The Secret of Chateau de Moreau. It is an iOS RPG clearly designed with the longtime RPG lover in mind. That’s not to say it won’t appeal to newbies to the genre, however. Its appeal rests on classic RPG elements rather than novelties, and that’s what will draw in RPG diehards; its simple controls, smooth interface, and great graphics will serve to bring in the rest of the crowds.

So what makes playing EpicHearts like meeting an old friend for the first time? There’s the classic fantasy setting — warriors, magic, vaguely medieval get-ups, dragons, etc. Then there are the quests — NPCs all over the map, requests, shopping lists and crises that, of course, only the player character can solve. Let’s find out more after the jump. (more…)

Social network games have become extremely popular in part due to their simplicity. For the same reason, however, some fans grow bored after a period of infatuation.

Keri Racing, named for the ability to race fantastical feathered “keris,” plans to turn that trend on its head by providing plenty of variety in exchange for long-term loyalty. If you’re nostalgic for the good old days when your favorite SNG wasn’t just a grind, Keri Racing might just be the cure you’re looking for. (more…)

There’s a little blue hedgehog that’s been winning gamers’ hearts for over two decades, and he’s back again in Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II. We can’t get into Episode II’s pros and cons without touching on how it compares to Episode I, largely because Episode I was a bit of a disappointment for many long-time Sonic fans. When a video game character has a trademark play style that’s been around as long as our little ‘hog hero’s, finding the game’s physics have gone foul is not going to please fans.

If your hedgehog hero-worship is still faltering after Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I’s sluggish, slippery, slo-mo interpretation of Sonic, you’ll be very pleased to hear that Episode II gets it right, along with a substantial improvement in the graphics department with Retina display support. Now that we’ve eased those fears, let’s delve a little more deeply into what makes Episode II great — and what doesn’t. (more…)

Jelly Oasis is guilty of only one misstep in this gorgeous little game: the title. “Elf Defense” is descriptive in only the most vague way; it really doesn’t do this fantastic castle defense effort justice at all.

But a rose by any other name would smell as sweet, they say, and Elf Defense is a tour de force that plays just as phenomenally regardless of the name. Perhaps the bare bones naming of the game was a sort of concession to modesty, or maybe the makers of Jelly Oasis have noted that some of the most over-the-top titles in the App Store are attached to games that are mediocre at best.  At any rate, don’t be fooled — Elf Defense has all of the bells and whistles, and then some. For some of us, a game isn’t a game unless there’s some gunpowder involved. Thankfully, hidden amongst the clutter of word puzzles, birds you sling at pigs, and other grenade-launcher-lacking yawners, the App Store offers some true gems in the heat-packing department. Even better? Plenty of them are free. So we’ll spare you the search and give you the low down on a few of our favorite free or super cheap gun-toting games.

Chillingo’s Contre Jour is a perfect game for chilling out, as its seller’s name suggests. This wonderfully weird title takes players on a soothing little trip through a world that’s clearly on the flipside. Contre Jour is a French term, mostly used in film and photography, that means “against daylight.” The twilight world of Contre Jour’s odd little hero fits its name perfectly.

It’s a game many have looked forward to, and if it’s one you haven’t heard up, be prepared to hear a lot more about it. Secret of Chateau de Moreau is a point and click (well, touch and tap) adventure with a murder mystery backstory. It’s been praised for its 100+ puzzles, intricate artwork and dynamic outcomes. The game boasts dozens of alternate endings, each set into motion by the individual choices of the player as he or she races to uncover the secrets of the chateau.

Gameloft’s BackStab is hailed as a leap forward in 3D graphics and free-roaming adventure for the iOS platform. The graphics are stunning — from the movement, to the action and the cut scenes. The island, which contains many exotic environments, will impress you and demand your utmost attention. It will be hard to find a competitor for such a solid game.
