Would you like an app that gives you new ideas and forces you to think?  While the press is pondering the way gadgets distract and can keep us from spending time thinking, we’re going to look at an app that promises to promote your creativity and give you food for thought.

The iPhone is now an established gaming platform, particularly for racing games. But what about the iPad? Does it make sense to hold the large device between your hands and turn it like a steering wheel? Electronic Arts thinks so, and they have two games from the popular Need for Speed franchise that aim to prove a point.

So we figured we’d put both Need for Speed: Shift and Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit under the magnifying glass and see if either of them can take the heat.

The original Star Wars film may have been released over 30 years ago, but the Star Wars universe is still going strong. A good example of this is the wide variety of Star Wars-themed games available in the App Store today.

One of the latest releases is Star Wars Arcade: Falcon Gunner, and it takes all of the fun of the movies and puts you right in the middle of it all. But is it worth the money? Hit the jump to find out.

SimCity has been on iOS since 2008 but earlier this year in July, developer EA Mobile released a new Deluxe version for iPhone. Just recently did they release an iPad version to make use of the large screen and graphical capabilities of Apple’s latest addition to the iOS lineup.

SimCity for iOS is pretty much a copy of SimCity 3000 with a new touchscreen user interface. All the graphics of the former PC game are still there but the gameplay has been very slightly altered and updated for a modern game.

You have three mutants slicing at you with razor sharp knives and only four bullets left in your machine gun. You’ve just entered the world of Rage, the newest application from the developers of Doom. Rage pushes the limits on using your iPad and iPhone for gaming. The game features amazing graphics with detail and speed you would expect from a PS3 or Xbox.

Rage is a point and shoot game, with your main objective to mame and kill as many mutants as possible. It takes all the same graphics and power you’ve come to expect on a gaming console and brings it to your mobile device. Play through three challenging and detailed levels, the Bunker, Tenements, and the Asylum. You have a choice of three weapons as you progress through the levels and fight off swarms of mutants, choose from a shotgun, a machine gun, or a pistol. Take aim at the horde of mutants and unload your clip before they reach you.

Back in October, the team at Rovio Mobile launched a new game in their ever-popular catalog: Angry Birds Halloween. Now the birds are back in Angry Birds Seasons, a free upgrade to the Halloween game adding 25 new levels for the month of December!

Back in August, developer Rovio announced it had gained more than 6.5 million paid downloads on Apple’s app store with the iPad version owning over 200,000 of those sales. More of the same thing can surely only be good, and Rovio have achieved that.

Ready to push your engineering limits and successfully route trains in tight situations?  Even if you never enjoyed model train sets as a kid, you may find that routing trains is as fun, and maybe even more challenging, than shooting angry birds at pigs.  Let’s take a look at Trainyard, a newer game in the App Store, and see if trainyards still are appealing in the 21st century.

iOS devices are great for increasingly intensive 3D games, but sometimes you just want to relax and play a game that will spark your imagination while giving your eyes a rest.  Trainyard is an innovative puzzle game that does just that.  The game consists of laying out tracks to guide trains from their origin to their destination, starting out with easy layouts and working up to mind-bending levels that take ingenious track layouts to solve.

In the fast-paced landscape of the App Store, it’s very rare that a game can make us slow down and pause in genuine admiration. Some manage it with good humour or a clever new mechanic, others with the sheer beauty of their presentation. Sometimes the two come together. Among those few titles is Osmos: a game designed for contemplation.

Eschewing hyperactivity in favour of a more patient pace, Osmos offers gamers a gorgeous and fluid environment in which the simple task of growing your single-celled organism is explored through 2 different game modes and 8 distinct level formats for a total of 72 diverse levels. It is one of the most highly acclaimed games on the App Store and, as we’re about to discover, the praise is well earned.

Among people who like playing games, I think that there are a few types. There are those who play massive, epic three-dimensional games with dedicated consoles, and then there are the rest of us who become casually addicted to gems like Rolando, Topple 2, Doodle Jump, and my new favorite, Cut the Rope, by Chillingo in conjunction with ZeptoLab.

As you have probably guessed, this review is going to be about Cut the Rope. Keep reading after the fold to see what I think of this truly charming App Store phenomenon.
