Join Generation Mo and Change the Face of Men’s Health

Today is a big day. On this first day of Movember (the month formerly known as November) millions of men around the world will shave their faces and begin to grow a moustache. They grow their Mo’s to change the face of men’s health and bring awareness to prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health issues like depression. Through the independent global charity, Movember, these Mo Bros (and supportive Mo Sistas) raise funds for research and support programs for men’s health.

In 2012 1.1 million Mo Bros and Mo Sistas around the globe raised $147 million for Movember. This year, I’ve joined the movement as a Mo Sista and you can join too with the Movember app.

The Story Behind the Mo

Movember was founded in Melbourne, Australia in 2003 by two friends who wanted to bring the moustache back into fashion. They convinced 30 of their friends to grow a mo just for fun. The next year they decided to do it for charity, raising money for prostate cancer, and were able to raise $43,000. Over the years the Movember movement has expanded to 21 countries around the world and globally three million participants have raised $446 million to this day.

The Movember vision is “to have an everlasting impact on men’s health.” The issues are serious, but the campaign is seriously fun. For example, they worked with Made Man to create hilarious videos of Nick Offerman (the actor who plays Ron Swanson on Parks & Recreation) explaining How to Grow a Moustache and detailing Great Moments in Moustache History. Everything about the campaign is manly, from the bold, brash design to The Rules of initiation for Mo Bros.

Growing Your Own Mo

The app has everything you need to join the movement, raise funds and even grow your very own stylish moustache suited to your unique personality. The Style Guide gives you 9 Mo’s to choose from, including the Trucker, the Rockstar and the Abacadabra. Rule No. 5 states that, “each Mo Bro must conduct himself like a true gentleman,” and a gentleman always has a well-groomed moustache.

Use the app to track the growth of your Mo every day, creating a filmstrip and video chronicling your mo growth. Sharing your Mo with friends is a great way to keep them talking about Movember, increasing awareness and raising mo money.

Movember is all about spreading the word and these guys have great schwag. Through the app you can download phone and tablet wallpapers with this year’s icons: a “swift-silent-hairy” wolf or a fierce looking snake.

Manage Your Movember Fundraising On Mobile

It’s not all fun and games — this app has tons of great tools to help you manage your Movember campaign and do the most important thing: raise money for the charity. You can take donation payments quickly and easily through the app, using a credit card or PayPal account.

The app has donation request messages prewritten, which you can modify to make more personal and send on to friends or co-workers through Email, Google+, LinkedIn, Twitter or Facebook. You can also recruit friends to your team to grow a mo and raise funds and say thanks to those who’ve donated funds.

Stay motivated by having a look at the Leaderboards, where you can see how much money is being raised on a global scale or by country. If you’ve got a competitive spirit you’ll enjoy the ability to filter real time Leaderboard statistics by country, individual and/or team. Your Mo Space is a news feed where you can post messages, share updates and upload photos. You’ll receive notifications when activity happens on your account and new donations are received.

Educate Yourself and Your Mo Bros

Raising money and support for men’s health issues are only two pieces of the puzzle. The third piece is to get men talking. Movember seeks to get men actively engaged in their own health and the moustache is a conversation starter at the grassroots level. The Health Tips section of the app highlights health risks men face and healthy habits Mo Bros adopt to reduce these risks.

The Movember website shares a ton of interesting statistics, and it would be great to see some of these promoted on the app. For example, I had no idea that, “A man is 35% more likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer than a woman is to be diagnosed with breast cancer.” Did you?

Conclusion

If you’re interested in joining the Mo Generation as a Mo Bro or Mo Sista, the free Movember app has everything you need to get started. These guys have designed a fresh, modern and fun app that’s easy to use and super helpful in running your fund raising campaign. They’ve also done a great job of creating a community by giving users access to fundraising data across the globe and the ability to communicate with each other in real time. November 1st is the day for Mo Bros to shave their faces clean and dedicate the next 30 days to growing a moustache in an effort to change the face of men’s health. It’s about all the Mo Bros banding together with the essential support of all the Mo Sistas. The Movember app is a great way to stay connected and motivated as you raise funds and recruit team members. As they say, “United We Mo.”
