Bring Home the Gold with Flick Champions HD

When I think of sports games, I think of ones with extreme graphics and hundreds of controls. Nowadays, games like FIFA and Madden have taken the App Store by storm. Even though these are great console games, I have never found them all that great for something like the iPhone.

If there were one sports game I’d recommend for the iPhone, it would have to be Flick Champions HD. Flick Champions HD is the iOS sports game done right. Read more about it after the jump.

What is Flick Champions HD?

Flick Champions HD is the Olympics of iOS games. The goal is to become the champion in all of the eight sports the game includes: soccer, basketball, tennis, hockey, bowling, archery, mini golf, and [American] football.

Many developers still use joysticks in sports games, but joysticks have never really worked on the iPhone. Luckily, the developers of Flick Champions HD took a different approach to controls in their game. The controls are really simple. Though they vary depending on what game you are playing, the basic gist is to flick to shoot and drag your characters to move them around. This can be a bit finicky at first, but after playing the game for a little while, you will become an unstoppable force. Either way, they are better than that silly joystick.

Eye on the Prize

Something that Flick Champions does really well is making the user play the app in order to unlock new features. At first, only four sports (soccer, basketball, hockey, and tennis) are available. In order to unlock the other four games, you actually need to play the game, which isn’t a bad thing. Of course, if you really wanted to take the lazy way out, you can unlock every sport via a $0.99 in-app purchase.

For those of you who want to earn your stripes, you will need to work your way up by collecting experience points, or XP. Every game you play will earn you experience points; the amount of XP you are awarded depends on whether you win or lose and the difficulty of your opponent. XP builds up rather quickly and goes towards unlocking new items as well as the rest of the sports.

Each sport has two game modes you can choose from: exhibition or cup. Exhibition mode is like a pick-up game. You can customize the game to your liking by changing opponent difficulty and game length, among other options — you can even play against a friend in this mode. Needless to say, exhibition mode is amazing if you need a quick-fix to hold you over.

Each game is unique but the goal is the same: to get to the top

Cup mode is the other game mode that Flick Champions has to offer. Each sport has three cups to win: Rookie, Pro, and Veteran; the cups get harder as you go on. This is where you get the real Olympic feel; cup mode is complete with a 16-branch bracket and all. In order to win the cup, you will need to win four games in a row. Though it does take a while to beat, it is most definitely worth it. Not only are you awarded a substantial XP bonus, but you also win bragging rights.

Perhaps the best thing about the gameplay in Flick Champions HD is how each sport is unique even though they share similar controls. The fact that hockey has very different gameplay than that of, say, football just makes the game all the more enjoyable. Plus, it allows for hours of entertainment and you are guaranteed your money’s worth.

Graphics Fit for Champions

If there were an Olympic event for app design, Flick Champions would take the gold. Sure, the graphics in the game are not the most realistic, but that doesn’t mean that they are not awesome. For one, the sports theme is thoroughly implemented throughout the application; it never loses its Olympic games feel.

Additionally, the game has those simple, fun graphics but also keep detail — a style that is much appreciated in any iOS app. So while the people do not look like people, the detail in the playing environments — even things as simple as the texture of the ground or lighting — just make the app’s graphics some of the best I’ve ever seen. This happy medium also allows the user to keep their focus on the gameplay.

The Prizes

One of the coolest things about the game is the selection of countries to choose from. In each sport, you are able to pick which team you would like to represent. You have your choice of 54 countries, ranging from the basic USA, UK, or Canada to countries whose flags I can’t even recognize.

The app is also packed with a bunch of other fun features. As you gain XP, you will unlock new items to play with. This adds a little bit of crazy fun into the game because you can be bowling with Rubik’s cubes or football with a hot dog. These fun little additions make the game a ball for people of all ages.

Another really cool feature is stats. By tapping on the clipboard at the bottom of the main menu, you will be able to view your stats in all eight of the games both individually and overall. Stats include your win/lose ratio, time played,  and favorite game among other things that pertain to each sport. The stats feature, though it isn’t necessary, is a really nice way of checking up on your progress and gives a little extra oomph to the sports feel.

The Verdict

Flick Champions HD is by far one of the best iPhone games I have ever played. Not only does it feature eight different sports, but also two different gameplay modes; this provides you with countless hours of gameplay. Combined with the amazing Olympic-themed graphics, this game really gives you a sense of competition unlike any game I have played before and actually makes you want to strive to win the gold.

At just $2.99, Flick Champions HD is a bargain. Trust me — after the first time you open the application, it will become your newest addiction.
