Get Your Race On With Asphalt 6: Adrenaline

It’s Game Week here at iPhone.AppStorm, and all this week we’re going to have tons of reviews, giveaways and other good stuff, all centered around the gaming world!

I’m a big fan of racing games, and since the first iPhone came out, these types of games have been the best for this device, since the accelerometer gives you a very nice driving feeling. There are a lot of competitors in this game category, though. Some of them are very realistic, like Real Racing 2, and others not so much. The great thing about Asphalt 6 : Adrenaline is that it mixes realism with some cool features, and is very fun to play. Read on for a preview of what this game has to offer.

So You Wanna Be A Racer?

The game’s career is fairly extensive, with enough leagues and races to have you playing for weeks. You start with a very simple car (at least compared to the cars you can buy later), and compete in eight different types of races: normal, elimination, under pressure, beat ’em all, duel, time attack, collector and drift. The different race types are explained every time you start a race, so you always know what to do. Some of them are pretty self-explanatory, like the drift and normal races, others not so much. For example, beat ’em all races, where you need to eliminate your opponents by forcing them to crash.

Driving is pretty intuitive, and there are different driving modes, including auto-acceleration, manual acceleration and even an on-screen steering wheel. The most fun is the default mode, with auto-acceleration and using the accelerometer for steering. This can be changed from the app’s option menu.

By the way, the game’s called Asphalt 6: Adrenaline for something; depending on your skills, at one point you’ll have enough energy to use a nitro boost powerful enough to wipe all opponents off the track. Also called Adrenaline Mode, you’ll know you can use it when the bar at the top of the screen is completely full. There are many ways to fill it up quicker, like collecting items on the track or drifting (my personal favorite).

To drift, simply break for a split-second while turning and the car will start to drift. Be sure to control it well, otherwise you’ll start to go slower instead of taking turns faster!

The Cars

This game features some very nice cars. Models from the Nissan 370Z to the Bugatti Veyron will make it very hard to choose when buying one. There are more than 40 different vehicles ranging from super sporty cars to some very nice motorbikes.

My personal favorites are the Nissan 370Z, the Audi TT and the Bugatti Veyron. The first two cars are pretty cheap and you can get through most of the leagues with them (if you tune them up of course). You should definitely try the last car, since it’s wicked fast and very fun to use in multiplayer races.

Tuning Up Your Ride

All cars can be equipped with better nitros, intake, handling, etc. You can even choose your sponsor, which usually improves the performance of the car a little or makes you earn more money at the end of a race.

You can choose to tune anything from handling to turbo

To tune one of your cars, choose a race, and from the car selection menu tap the wrench icon at the bottom. Here, you’ll have access to different levels of tuning. Most of the tune-ups are pretty inexpensive and, in my experience, are normally a better choice than actually purchasing a new car. I’ve played most of the first leagues using the 370Z and a lot of tuning.

Multiplayer

This might be the best feature of this game. You can play against anyone with an iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch and even a Mac (yes, it’s available for the Mac as well), through Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, and you can even play against people anywhere in the world.

The best thing about the multiplayer feature is that you can choose any car you want, so it’s a great chance to try that model you’ve been thinking about buying in career mode!

Conclusion

This game is a definitive must-have. It’s a lot of fun and one can play for weeks before the campaign is over. The amount of cars the game comes with is also amazing, and being able to play with friends and people all over the world is a plus. I’d say it’s one of the best racing games out there, and since it’s available in a lot of different platforms, it makes multiplayer racing a blast and extremely fun.

There are some things I don’t like very much though, most importantly the interface. I don’t mean the appearance, but rather the usability. It’s sometimes hard to use, and most of the buttons are a little too small for an iPhone screen (the interface is great on an iPad, with its big screen). Apart from that, there’s nothing that should really be improved. Word of advice though: Gameloft recently implemented In-App purchases for all content that you haven’t yet unlocked (like some tracks or cars). If you tap them, you’ll be given the choice to buy them. Don’t be spending your whole salary on (virtual) cars! And of course, drive safe.

Summary

Single and multiplayer racing in a fast and fun game.
