Blush for Wine

If you’re curious about wine but have trouble deciding what you want, Blush for Wine makes it super easy to find a wine to pair well with a meal, to give as a perfect gift, to make a hit at a social event, or to relax you after a long day.

The app guides you through the selection process using just a few questions, beginning with the occasion and ending with your budget. Then it delivers results that perfectly match your mood and criteria. Could it get any easier? Click through to learn more about how to find wines you absolutely love.

What’s the Occasion?

Upon startup, Blush for Wine will ask if it’s OK to use your current location so that you can shop for your favorite wines locally (More on that under “Final Thoughts” below). After you make that decision, you can “start blushing,” as the app says.

I view the app as having two important main features: to make recommendations, and to keep track of wines you’ve tried and loved. Let’s start with that first one.

Begin the recommendation process by deciding on the occasion.

The discovery process begins with what it calls an exploration of your mood. Blush first asks “What’s the occasion?” with your possible answers including “dining,” “gift,” “social” or “relax.” Whichever answer you choose, the app will then ask you a few lighthearted questions based on your response, making the process easy and fun.

Blush uses your answers to determine what kind of wine will be perfect.

Blush uses your answers to determine what kind of wine will be perfect.

For example, if you’re looking for a wine for a meal, the app will want to know what you’re eating and what kind of flavors you usually enjoy. On the other hand, if you’re looking for a wine for a social occasion, the app will want to know how you’d categorize the event — casual, date, formal, picnic, or barbecue perhaps? Do you prefer a red wine or a white wine? What kind of price range are you’re aiming for?

Your budget is taken into consideration, which is a plus.

Based on your criteria, Blush will make suggestions that match your mood, as well as tell you a little about them. Tap on any of the recommended wines in order to learn more about that individual vintage.

Searching, Finding, Keeping, Sharing

I view the app’s second main feature as being able to help you keep track of the wines you’ve tried and loved.

Blush’s Find tab is great for this, as tapping it calls up the capability to scan a barcode on a bottle of wine. Simply hover your phone near the bottle until the barcode aligns with the scanning area on your screen and presto, the app will retrieve information pertaining to that wine. You can also tap the search field in order to manually input the name of any wine.

You could use this feature while shopping for a wine to match your mood. After you’ve answered the app’s mood questions, start scanning different bottles on the shelf. Blush for Wine remembers what kind of wine you’re looking for and can tell you how well a particular wine matches your mood.

You could also use this feature while you’re out to dinner or at a party. If you find a wine you’d love to remember, simply scan the barcode on the bottle and the information is yours. Tap the heart icon next to any bottle to increase your rating of it.

Conveniently, all your scans are saved under the History tab, which you can return to at any time. There, you can view all your wines according to the date or the price, or you can view all the wines you’ve “loved” or saved via scanning.

Finally, don’t forget to share! When you tap on an individual wine you’ll notice its information page includes an option share the wine with friends via Facebook, Twitter, SMS or email. And you can take care of linking your Facebook and Twitter accounts under the Settings tab.

Final Thoughts

This app is beautifully done and fun to use. It’s great for figuring out what kind of wine to order at dinner, for example, with beef versus fish. The barcode-reading capability is convenient if the bottle is available, but if I order by the glass and have to manually search for the wine, then at least the app still saves that search result in my History.

The team behind Blush says the more you use the app, the more it learns about your tastes, and presumably, the better recommendations it will give. In my opinion, if the whole concept is focused on the discovery of wines, then whether or not the app starts to adapt to what I’ve liked in the past is not of huge importance to me.

Really, the only thing this app leaves me fuzzy on is how I would find a specific wine in my city. According to Blush, if it has permission to know your location, it searches wine stores nearest to you using its database. I can see that the app remembers my location; however, I have yet to be presented with a map or list of stores. That said, as the app is still relatively new, maybe mine is a city whose information hasn’t yet been integrated — in which case, I look forward to the option becoming available in the future. Or, maybe I’m just missing something.

Still, that missing element won’t be enough to keep me from using Blush for Wine on a continued basis, and it shouldn’t deter you either. The fun factor will win you over, too.

Summary

Blush helps you discover great wines perfectly suited to your occasion and budget.
