iPhone Game Friday: New Releases

Welcome to another issue of iPhone Game Friday. This week sees us take another look at the latest releases to the App Store, from the wonderful iSlice, to big name releases such as FIFA World Cup and Iron Man 2.

The big news in the iPhone gaming world at the moment is that Gameloft are currently giving away an App for free every day (except weekends) for two hours a day in order to mark their 10th birthday. This runs from May 10th to May 21st and you can find out when the next ‘Happy Hour’ is by following @gameloft on Twitter.

Once again, if you have any comments, or an app that you want reviewed, get in touch!

iSlice

iSlice

Those of you following us on Twitter (@iphoneappstorm) will have seen a mention of iSlice in a tweet this week. I’ve lost quite a large amount of my life to this infuriatingly addictive game and, for those of you who like a challenge, I highly recommend it.

The aim is simple, you drag your finger across a shape to slice chunks off it while avoiding the bouncing balls. You need to slice the shape to a certain size in order to pass the level, some of which are easy, others are just plain difficult.

There are 20 levels, however I have been stuck on level 11 for the last 2 days, leading me to endlessly try to repeat the level when I had many more important things to do…Well worth 99 cents though.

Fifa

Fifa

FIFA World Cup

I’m going to be openly honest in admitting that I gave FIFA 2010 a pretty horrible review when it came out. It just wasn’t very good at all. Thankfully though, Electronic Arts have made a number of improvements with their World Cup release, leading to a much improved control system, better AI and just generally more enjoyable gameplay.

The game has two main modes, a World Cup mode and a Captain your Country mode. In either mode you can pick one of 105 teams to lead to World Cup glory, however in Captain your Country you control just the captain of the team. Overall the game lacks depth, reflecting the lower price over FIFA 2010, however it’s a big improvement on its predecessor.

High Noon

High Noon

High Noon

I’m a huge fan of innovative games and so was drawn to the rather ingenious High Noon from developers happylatte. It’s a clever take on Western duals, where you take on players from around the globe in one-on-one shootouts.

Using the iPhone as a gun, you must first holster your weapon, before drawing and attempting to kill your opponent. The controls seem incredibly fiddly, using the accelerometer to control to direction of the shot, but with a bit of practice it shows promise of being a fantastic game.

Iron Man 2

Iron Man 2

Iron Man 2

iPhone game giants Gameloft bring another movie blockbuster to the platform with the release of Iron Man 2. Take control of either Iron Man or War Machine as you tackle Ultimo, Firepower and Whiplash, along with a host of other enemies.

The game features a slick control system and the ability to upgrade your suit with new weapons and abilities, however the main drawback is the short life-span. You can probably finish the game in a day, although it would be a hell of a good day with a fantastic soundtrack!

iBomber 2

iBomber 2

iBomber 2

Sequel to the rather enjoyable iBomber is iBomber 2, featuring 12 new WWII missions across North Africa and Europe. The gameplay is almost identical to the original, with you attacking enemy bases, submarines, tanks and trucks.

New to iBomber 2 is the ability to use fighter escorts for protection and to call in airstrikes on enemies. The game is an all round improvement on the first, now including a touch control system for those of you who get confused with the accelerometer, and looks fantastic with stunning birds-eye view graphics.
