iPhone Game Friday: New Releases

Game Friday this week will once again take a look at the new releases to the iPhone App Store. Despite all the content being released for the iPad, there’s no shortage of fantastic new iPhone games!

This time around we see the major release of Crash Bandicoot Nitro Kart 2 as well as a couple of innovative little games; textRace and Bowmaster. Read on to find out more.

X2 Soccer 2010

For those of you who aren’t fans of FIFA, X2 Soccer provides a more arcade-style approach to an iPhone soccer game. There are over 250 club teams and 30 competitions to compete in, along with a fantastic new Dream Team mode where you must build the best team in the world by competing in matches and tournaments to win tokens, which can be exchanged for players.

Gameplay is slick, and the simple controls make for an enjoyable gaming experience. Multiplayer mode is also available over Wi-Fi and bluetooth, allowing you to challenge your mates to a match.

Where’s Panda? The Amazing Journey

A new release for children and families this week is “Where’s Panda?”, a game that is essentially Where’s Waldo, but with a panda. Cutesy graphics and simple gameplay make this perfect for distracting young children with while you get some rest in the afternoons.

There are 15 levels to complete, with each one offering three attempts at finding the Panda. In all honesty though, while the game appears to be challenging enough for most children, it is unlikely to appeal to adults.

Crash Bandicoot Nitro Kart 2

Crash Bandicoot Nitro Kart 2

After the success of the original Crash Bandicoot release, Activision have done the incredibly clever thing and brought us a sequel. Race as one of 10 characters on 12 new tracks, the game features all of the powerups and crazy racing you would expect to see in a Crash Bandicoot game.

Brand new to this version is Wi-Fi multiplayer mode, allowing for you to challenge up to four friends in order to see who comes out on top. The only thing that would make me wary about buying this game is Activision’s lack of updates provided for the original game. No updates in two years would make me a little skeptical about what will be provided this time round.

Something slightly more innovative is textRace from textPlus Labs. The game challenges you to type sentences quickly as you face 28 different missions, each slightly more challenging than the previous one.

Also featuring a training mode and the ability to pit yourself against the current world record, there is certainly a good lifespan to this game. It also improves your accuracy and speed when composing messages and emails, so what more could you ask for?

Bowmaster

Bowmaster

Bowmaster

I say time and time again that I love something a little different and so last this week, but by no means least, is Bowmaster. In the game you take control of a bowman aspiring to become leader of the Merry Five.

Take on 5 levels of one-on-one archery by dragging your fingers across the screen to aim and fire the bow. It’s a clever control system and one that produces a fantastically enjoyable game as you try and get onto the online leaderboard. Graphics are also some of the best I’ve seen on the iPhone, with a fully immersive 3D environment. Well worth a dollar!
