iPhone Game Friday: New Releases

We’re back for another roundup of New Releases to the iPhone App Store on this edition of Game Friday. This week features a number of games that have been created by some of our readers, along with a couple that caught my attention.

If you wish to submit a game to us for inclusion in a Game Friday, let us know by using the link on the right-hand side.

Not the Word

We start this week with Nathan Hoad’s first iPhone app. Not the Word is a simple brain-training style game where you are given the name of a colour and have to select a paint can corresponding to the colour that the word is written in.

It tests your brain power well and is good fun to play, with the desire to beat your high score keeping you coming back for more.

Adapted from the Nintendo DSi game ‘Escapee GO!’ you play a prison escapee who has special psychic abilities. There is a certain Pacman quality to the game, as you must avoid the guards that hide in the shadows, before gaining power ups and attacking them.

The graphics are intentionally a little on the poor side but the gameplay is fast and fun. You can control your character using one of three different control systems (D-Pad, Swipe and Accelerometer) as you evade guards and complete the 15+ levels of the game.

There is also a free mode and survival mode included, so there is a lot to complete!

Street Fighter IV

The legendary Street Fighter franchise comes to the iPhone with Street Fighter IV delivering one of the best examples of a fighting game on the platform. Everything that was great about the original is here, with 8 characters, 7 environments and the classic Street Fighter fighting style.

There’s an in depth tutorial mode for anyone new to the series and, for those of you with iPhone touting friends, you can take each other on using Bluetooth multiplayer.

Horse racing games can sometimes be a bit boring – you just sit there and hit the horse until it either collapses from exhaustion or you win the race. But iDerby is different. Featuring a pretty lengthy career mode with 30 cup events, it’s the game’s control system that sets it apart from the others.

iDerby uses the iPhone’s accelerometer to steer your horse from the inside to the outside of the track, meaning you have control going round corners and overtaking other horses.

As with other games you also control the speed but it is the accelerometer control that makes the game fun to play. Try out the Lite version for free.

Yipe 5: Lite RPG – Attack of Idle Hands

Last but by no means least is Yipe 5 Lite, the free demo RPG from Yipe Software. While the graphics leave a little to be desired, the gameplay is really good fun, as you go on the King’s Quest to rid the area of zombie animals.

Weapons are all a bit odd, like pitchforks and wooden sticks, and the health powerups are Cheeseburgers but these quirky elements help Yipe 5 stand out from the crowd. There is quite a lot to do for just a demo version, with a whole cave and 8 levels to advance through. You can upgrade to the full game in-app for just $1.99.
