iPhone Game Friday: Puzzle Games

Puzzle Games are one of the strongest games categories on the iPhone with some truly great new concepts being brought to the genre as well as old classics being redesigned to take advantage of the touch screen capabilities. As a programmer, I love a good puzzle game to get my brain in gear on the way to work so that when I get there I’m all ready to dive into the problems of the day.

So today’s list will focus on a few of my favourites as well as a couple that have caught my eye recently. If you have any recommendations, I would be glad to hear of them!

iPharoah

iPharoah

One of my personal favourites in the puzzle genre, iPharaoh combines part action and part strategic puzzle into a challenging game which is great as a quick pick up and play.

The objective is to protect your treasure from the many enemies that are trying to steal it by guiding your mummified pharaohs towards the enemy. Early levels are quick to progress through, however once you get to the later stages there are a number of difficult challenges that take many goes to complete. It’s on sale right now so grab it and give iPharaoh a go.

Bomb Master

Bomb Master

Bomb Master

Something a little different is this new game from Ivan Starchenkov. Billed as a physics puzzle, the objective behind Bomb Master is to destroy different bridges by strategically placing bombs and detonating them. The more accurate your placement, the better the demolition and the more money you make from it.

There are 40 levels to complete and a beautiful user interface, whereby the bridges look like construction drawings, will make you want to keep coming back to this game.

Geared

Geared

Geared

One of the most popular apps on the iPhone, I’m going to admit that I never actually got round to downloading the game until today. However I am glad I did! For those of you unfamiliar with Geared, the aim is to place a number of gears in the correct places in order to ensure that all gears are moving at the end of the level.

It’s great fun, if a little frustrating, and without any snap-to-grid gameplay there are limitless possibilities and combinations. The 120 levels will keep you going for a good while and for those of you unsure of purchasing the app, there is a free 16 level version which is sure to convert you!

Pipe Mania

Pipe Mania

Pipe Mania

This app instantly brought back memories of Windows 3.1 and my first ever computer. Pipe Mania for the iPhone is a remake of the original Amiga/PC version of the game that came out in 1989. Gameplay is as simple as ever, you connect the pipe to keep the floozie flowing for as long as possible.

Requiring quick thinking and hand-eye coordination, it’s great for warming your brain up on the way to work. There is a lot to keep you occupied here as well, with a quirky storyline and 39 levels containing 354 sublevels. Once again there is a Free version to try out before you buy the full game.

Rush Hour

Rush Hour

Rush Hour

I have the original of this in a box somewhere and was delighted when it was released on the iPhone, because it is one of the most frustrating yet rewarding games I can remember. From the same developers as the original, the aim is to free your car from a traffic jam by moving the cars around till you clear your route.

As an extension to the table-top game, the app tracks the number of moves you make, giving you a target to try and beat if you come back to the level. However, it may be a while before you play the same level more than once as there are 2500 levels in the game spread across 4 difficulty modes.

The simplistic interface does not detract from the gameplay and some of the expert levels can leave you tearing your hair out. A complete bargain at just $.99 there is also a free version with 70 levels.
