iPhone Game Friday: Word Games

This week’s edition of iPhone Game Friday sees us take a look at some of the best word games currently available for the iPhone. Personally I feel there is no better way to pass the time and challenge your brain than by playing a word game on your way to work. It gets you thinking and in the right frame of mind to start the day.

We will cover 5 different word games this week, including popular titles such as Scrabble and Boggle, as well as a few games that you may not have come across before.

Scrabble

Scrabble

The classic word-game Scrabble came to the iPhone last year and contains all of the features you would expect from one of the most popular games ever made. Play solo or with your mates on Wi-Fi multiplayer or your Facebook account.

For those of you who have never played Scrabble, the aim is simple; you get 7 random letters with which to create words, ensuring that you use at least one letter already on the board, while also trying to score extra points with double and triple word scores. Definitely best played with friends.

The new iPad version of Scrabble appears set to “wow”, with the ability to view letters on your iPhone while the iPad becomes the playing board.

Word Search Ultimate Edition

Word Search Ultimate Edition

Word search apps are one of the most common genres of game on the iPhone and users are spoilt for choice with the different types and styles that are available. My personal favourite is Word Search Ultimate Edition from Renato Pessanha.

Priced at just $.99 there are 146 puzzles to complete based on a number of different themes, featuring both 11×11 and 15×15 grids. Progress on each puzzle is saved and the app also records your completion time. The only drawback is that people with larger fingers might struggle to do the 15×15 puzzles effectively!

Boggle

Boggle

Another classic game that has made the move to the iPhone is Boggle. The game is simple – you are given a random grid of 16 letters and must then make as many words as you can within a set time. Drag your finger over the letters to create words or shake your iPhone to reset the board.

There are three game modes to take on, and once you have completed a board you can email it to your friend and challenge them to beat your score. You can also unlock a number of achievements, giving you reason to keep coming back to this timeless classic.

Bubbleword

Bubbleword

Last, but by no means least is Bubbleword, a clever little word puzzle from Vaibhav Electronics. The aim is to find all the words that can possibly be made from 6 letters before the bubbles rise to the surface and the game ends.

What I love about this game is that it shows you how many more words you need to find, the length of each word and the words you have already found so you don’t duplicate yourself. If you get stuck you can switch the letters twice during the game.

The one drawback is that some of the words are very obscure, but its a fun game to play and is free, albeit with some pop-up adverts. Recommended!
